Juan has nearly 40 years of experience repairing strings, wind, brass, and percussion, with his particular area of expertise being in band instruments. Juan came to Lynchburg Music from Miami, Florida, where he has spent the last 28 years of his professional career owning and operating Novo Musical Instrument Repair, working closely with the Dade County School District as well as with professional musicians such as clarinetists George Linakis and Manuel Hartman, and flutists Carol Newton and Lindsay Hager.
Juan graduated from Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane, Washington, in 1976, with an Associate of Arts in Music Theory and Musical Instrument Repair. Along with being an excellent repair technician, he is a maker of fine wooden flute and piccolo head joints, and has designed and patented a clear acrylic flute. One of Novo’s acrylic flutes is played by jazz flutist Dave Valentin, while jazz flutist Nestor Torres plays exclusively the wooden head joints made by Novo. Juan is, therefore, as equally at home with professional instruments as he is with student and intermediate level instruments.
